River Birch, Betula nigra

River birch has a narrow, oval to pyramidal crown when young, that spreads wider with age.  It is distinguished by bronze colored bark that peels off in film-like papery curls.  River birch are best grown well spaced to produce single specimens.  Clumps planting produces weak, vulnerable trunks.  Branches have a drooping form and pruning is recommended while trees are young to remove lower branches.  Would do very well on the edge of a wetland, very aesthetically pleasing.
