Update for those interested in the Lawns to Legumes program.

Thank you for your interest in our Lawns to Legumes program.  The SWCD received more than 90 applications for cost share funding to increase pollinator habitat.  Unfortunately we are only able to fund 20 projects with this grant and your property was not selected for funding this year.  We are thrilled with the level of interest we have received with this grant opportunity and hope to apply for a second phase of pollinator habitat funding in the future.

There is one other option to apply for Lawns to Legumes funding, this is the individual support program that is administered by the Blue Thumb organization.  A new application period has just opened up for this program and will be accepting applications until January for plantings to occur in spring of 2023.  You can find the application information on the Blue Thumb’s website.

Those interested in moving forward with projects on their own are encouraged to utilize the online resources provided by the Board of Water and Soil Resources specifically designed for pollinator habitats in residential settings.  The Planting for Pollinators Habitat Guide goes into detail about different planting types, site preparation, and maintenance.  Lastly the DNR has a comprehensive list of vendors that supply native plant material that are recommended for pollinator habitat projects.

We appreciate your commitment to protect Minnesota’s native pollinator species!

Lawns to Legumes

The Lawns to Legumes program offers a combination of workshops, coaching, planting guides and cost-share funding for installing pollinator-friendly native plantings in residential lawns .  This competitively-funded program is intended to enhance pollinator habitat in key corridors, raise awareness for residential pollinator protection, and showcase best practices.  Funding is provided through the Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund (ENRTF) and will be targeted in priority areas to benefit the Rusty patched bumblebee and other at-risk species.

Lawns to Legumes Demonstration Neighborhood
Demonstration neighborhoods are community projects intended to enhance pollinator habitat in key corridors, raise awareness for residential pollinator protection, and showcase best practices. Organizations overseeing a demonstration neighborhood will work with local residents to install four types of beneficial planting practices: native pocket plantings, pollinator beneficial trees and shrubs, pollinators lawns and pollinator meadows.

If you are not located within the demonstration neighborhood there is still opportunity to be involved in the Lawns to Legumes program!
